“The Voice” Contestant Beats Drug Addiction

“The Voice” Contestant Beats Drug Addiction

Singing contestant shows like American Idol, the X-Factor, and The Voice have recently been excellent sources for inspiring stories. This season on The Voice, a 29 year old contestant named Jamar Rogers brings a very unique and moving story to the show. A few years ago, Rogers was homeless and addicted to crystal meth—and he is now HIV positive as a result of his drug use. After auditioning for American Idol on a few different occasions during the peak of his drug use and getting denied, Jamar decided to move to New York to change his life. After getting clean and staying sober for six years, Jamar auditioned for American Idol’s rival show The Voice in late 2011, and he was recently selected to Team Cee Lo. As a result, Rogers’ success on the show and singing career after the show look very promising, and he has his recovery from drug addiction to thank for that.

This story is encouraging on a few different levels. First and foremost, Jamar is living proof of a second chance. He admits that there were times that he thought it would be impossible to climb out of the dark hole that his drug addiction dug him into. But Jamar had the strength and will-power to not only beat his addiction and get sober, but then work hard and try to accomplish a difficult but rewarding goal. Rogers is also a great example of how important long term recovery is, and how staying clean and sober is a continuous battle that needs to be fought. Jamar has been sober for six years, and while living in the Bronx in addition to his job, he volunteers at a food bank for people with life-threatening illnesses because it’s rewarding for him and it’s a constant reminder of why he needs to stay clean. Jamar credits his family and the recovery treatment that he was exposed to that allowed him to get clean and stay sober. Recovery treatment from drug addiction is an extremely important step towards a sober life, and Seabrook offers some of the best help on the east coast.
