British Comedian Russell Brand Made Drug Documentary to Help Addicts
Russell Brand fought drug and alcohol abuse for many years before finally quitting completely in 2002. Now, he’s made a film that he hopes will help others struggling with drug or alcohol addiction or dependence. The name of Brand’s documentary is Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, and he’s hoping that it will inspire people to get clean. Brand said that the death of his friend Amy Winehouse last year from alcohol poisoning prompted him to film the documentary, which encourages treatment and abstinence for those suffering from addiction. He also said he wanted to encourage “having a program and a method to deal with a life free from drugs.”
Brand additionally took time to criticize governments that criminalize drug users rather than treating them. “I don’t think the criminalization works…and as a recovering drug addict I know that when I was using, the legal status of the drugs that I used made no difference.” Brand joins numerous other high-profile figures, including New Jersey governor Chris Christie, in advocating a recovery- and rehabilitation-based solution to drug problems.
