Recent heroin overdoses spark conversation in Southeast Pennsylvania School District
Heroin is the talk of Hatboro-Horsham residents due to recent alumni overdoses. The Hatboro-Horsham School District group decided to put together an impromptu panel and forum Sept. 30. However, those recent deaths were not the center of discussion. Instead, parents, administrators, staff and community members together to discuss what could be done to help those with substance abuse. While there are no easy answers, the eight panelists unanimously resounded, the discussion was a good first step. The forum brought together professionals from both Hatboro and Horsham, Additionally, the panel had a recovery therapist, a parent with three children in recovery and a young man who has been through the recovery process.
Studies show that 90 percent of herion users are white, middle class and between the age of 14 to 25. Of those young adults and teens in recovery for any drug or alcohol abuse, he said 85 percent are not only dealing with substance addictions, but psychiatric issues as well.
