Late Night Drunks Trouble New Jersey Towns
One New Jersey community is fighting to impose limits on late-night businesses, including the town’s liquor stores which stay open past midnight. City officials say that late businesses (chicken shacks, barber shops, and especially liquor stores) prove to be attracting all kinds of crime. Last year, one chicken shack in Paterson, New Jersey (NJ) was the scene of a battle featuring machetes.
And it’s not just violence—the late hours of liquor stores in Paterson have some people worried about the possibility of drunk driving. Paterson City Council President Anthony Davis said, “”There are people who come to Paterson all the way from Roselle and Clark to buy alcohol.” The small town is trying to enforce a few rules to cut down on the way that late businesses are proving to be a magnate for crime. The proposals include limiting hours the businesses can stay open, special licenses for lat businesses, or even mandatory guards for certain kinds of establishments. Though not all the transactions are violent, of course, this small New Jersey town is a very sobering case of how destructive the abuse of alcohol can be.
Alcohol is not a substance that should be treated lightly, and can often lead to violence and aggression. If you might have a problem with alcohol, you should seek help now. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating alcohol dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
