Herren Honored at Celtics Game

Chris Herren has a very unique story that involves the rise of a naturally gifted athlete, his plunge and subsequent downfall into substance abuse, and now his redemption. Herren grew up in Massachusetts, he was the 1994 Massachusetts Basketball Player of the Year, a McDonald’s All-American, and generally considered to be one of the best high school basketball players in the country by the time he was a senior. But when Herren got to college he allowed his celebrity status to get into his head and his life took a downward spiral from there.

Herren abused cocaine and alcohol throughout college, and when he got drafted to the NBA he had the drug abuse baggage attached to his name. During a couple of lackluster seasons in the NBA, Herren admits that he got into Oxycontin and rarely ever played a game sober. He was eventually cut by the Boston Celtics in 2001 after his underachieving performance as an NBA player. Herren became a basketball journeyman after his NBA days, playing in many foreign countries but still resorting to drugs. This cycle of substance abuse lasted until 2008, when the light bulb apparently went off for Herren. He received inpatient detox and rehab treatment, and Herren credits this treatment to getting his life back together. Chris Herren is now travels around as an inspirational speaker against substance abuse, and he was honored in the program ‘Heroes Among Us’ at the Boston Celtics game on April 24th 2012.

It’s inspirational that Herren not only moved on from his substance abusing lifestyle, but he now dedicates his time to helping other people that are currently in the same situation that he was in years ago. Experience speaks volumes and the fact that Herren was such a decorated athlete gives his inspirational speeches and efforts much more credit—especially to the younger males. He’s been there and done that, and as Herren explains in one of his speeches, “the reality is, I’ve lived in seven different foreign countries and six different American cities and I found drugs in all of them…so it’s not where you live, it’s the person that you’re bringing there.” Herren is a great spokesperson for rehabilitation treatment because he’s an example of how it can work.
