Have a Sober St. Patrick’s Day
Have a Sober St. Patrick’s Day
Many of those who are recovering from alcoholism tend to fear the St. Patrick’s Day holiday celebration because of its strong association and connection to drinking and partying, but just because some people celebrate by drinking doesn’t mean that everyone does or needs to. Recovering alcoholics, especially those of Irish decent, can take comfort in knowing that in recent years there have been many towns across the country who organize a sober way to celebrate the holiday.
Sober St. Patrick’s Day is the new way for those in recovery to still celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a healthy way. The idea of a sober St. Patrick’s Day is certainly not a new idea, but actually organizing an event for recovering alcoholics is the new trend. Specifically in New York City, Sober St. Patrick’s Day has been organized on 86th street accompanied with live music and support group meetings before and after. William Spencer Reilly has spent the last year developing this idea with the Caron Treatment Center in New York and key members in the Irish and Irish American community, as many New Yorkers in recovery have long since abandoned the festivities surrounding St. Patrick’s Day. People not in recovery also expressed great interest in attending.
Recovering from alcoholism can be a difficult task because of the temptations of the outside world, especially events and occasions that focus on drinking like St. Patrick’s Day. It’s encouraging to see organized efforts for recovering alcoholics to stay sober, and Sober St. Patrick’s Day is an excellent example of how this effort is succeeding.
