Gerard Butler in Rehab

Gerard Butler in Rehab

The actor most famous for his role in the movie 300, Gerard Butler, has landed in the Betty Ford treatment center for substance abuse. Butler apparently has a problem with prescription pain killer addiction and cocaine abuse. Unfortunately for Butler, his addiction to prescription pain killers stemmed from injuries that he’s sustained. Butler’s problems were triggered by the physical demands of shooting “300” in 2006. The actor began struggling with pain management and his addiction became worse while filming “Of Men and Mavericks,” when Butler was badly hurt last December during a surfing accident.

Sadly many people today are becoming addicted to prescription pain medicine as a result of dealing with pain from injuries they have sustained. Because of the relative ease of obtaining drugs like Lorcet, Darvocet, Lortab, Vicodin and Percocet, people who have surgeries or injure themselves often continue to take the pain killers after their recovery period which results in an addiction. Patients, healthcare professionals, and pharmacists all have roles in preventing the abuse of and addiction to prescription medications. For example, patients should follow the directions for use carefully, learn what effects and side effects the medication could have, and inform their doctor/pharmacist whether they are taking other medications [including over-the-counter (OTC) medications or health supplements], since these could potentially interact with the prescribed medication.

Pain killers are very addictive and can leave users physically dependent on them. As people become addicted to painkillers, they experience withdrawal when the drug wears off. Withdrawal is very unpleasant, and it often feels like an intensifying of the very symptoms the person was trying to escape through taking the painkillers.
