“Sticker Shock” Program Discourages Underage Alcohol Consumption

Sparta, New Jersey is starting a program to discourage adults buying alcohol for minors. The secret weapon? Stickers. As part of the “Sticker Shock” program, three liquor stores have agreed to allow youths (with adults accompanying them) to put stickers on their beer, wine, and distilled drinks. The stickers carry warnings that buying alcohol for minors carries severe penalties in the state of New Jersey, including fines and jail time. The program is coordinated with a local counseling organization that seeks to reduce bullying. The assistant director of the organization explained, “According to a recent study, there is a clear link between bullying and substance abuse. By involving youth in proactive prevention programs such as Sticker Shock, we can work on reducing bullying as well as preventing substance abuse.”

This Sticker Shock program is a valuable effort on the part of youth and adults to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors, where its destructive force is amplified.
