Staying clean and sober through Sport

Staying clean and sober through Sport

An extremely inspiring and exemplary story broke out of Denver earlier this month about a very healthy and positive way for ex-addicts to stay clean and sober after addiction treatment. Surely using athletic activities to fill the void in an addicts life is certainly nothing new, but the fact that there is a community center in Denver exclusively for recovering addicts makes this story unique. Phoenix Multisport is a sober support community that offers free athletic activities to recovering addicts. Phoenix offers roughly 50 programs per week, from casual walks and yoga to mountain biking and ice climbing. Activities are led by instructors who are in recovery themselves and are happy to extend help to members at the center for physical instruction or for the member’s personal recovery. Phoenix Multisport provides the gear and also offers grants to help people purchase their own equipment, and nearly all events are free.

One member who is overcoming a heroin addiction was interviewed about their experience with Phoenix Multisport, and he claimed that “they just make sure that you’re staying sober and having fun doing it…It’s the best support crew I could imagine having.” Phoenix Multisport is an excellent example of how committing to a healthy alternative habit after drug or alcoholism treatment can keep you clean and sober. Though Phoenix Multisport is a pioneer of sorts by actually building an organization dedicated primarily to a sober support community, the commitment to sport and organized athletics is a very successful way to stay sober, especially if you’re participating with other recovering addicts. Some rehab programs actually offer these kinds of athletic activities during treatment in order for the patient to find or rediscover a health alternative habit—and Seabrook is one of these rehab programs.
