New Jersey Drug Robbery Escalates to Violence

An attempted drug robbery at a Winslow, New Jersey pharmacy ended in shots fired and the suspect fleeing the scene, sources say. The pharmacist says a stocky man with a light beard, wearing a blue dress, long wig, and black sneakers, came up to the counter and demanded Oxycontin. Allegedly, the butt of a gun was visible in his fanny pack. The pharmacist, who is part of the Army Reserves, went into the back room and came back with a gun. “I’m no hero, but I thought, ‘Either him or [me],’” said the pharmacist. He fired several shots to chase the robber out of the store.

This event just illustrates the outrageous means that drug users will resort to in order to get their next fix. Whether the drug is prescription painkillers (as in this instance), meth, heroin, cocaine, PCP, bath salts, or something else, the desperation of addiction and drug tolerance can drive people to do things they normally wouldn’t—like dress up in a dress and try to rob a pharmacy. The best solution to the problem of drug dependence remains what it always has been: a good program of recovery at a facility with caring personnel and supportive fellow recoverers.

If you have a problem with drug addiction or dependence, you should seek help now before it’s you getting shot at. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
