Military Veterans at High Risk for Developing Addiction

Many soldiers who return home from war are often faced with battling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or some form of chronic pain from injuries. These conditions are normally treated with addicting medication like painkillers. While these medications may help the veterans in the short-term by relieving their pain and calming down their anxiety, it can hurt them in the long run. Sometimes they can become addicted to the medication and cause their bodies even more harm.

Therapy or counseling may be a better option for veterans suffering from PTSD or other conditions. The veterans can still receive treatment through these options but will have a better outcome. Doctors should think about the variety of options before writing a prescription for mood-altering medication.
