Doctor Shopping on the Rise
One of every 50 prescriptions for addictive prescription painkillers in the United States is filled for those “shopping for doctors.” A new study revealed that drug abusers cheat the system by going from one doctor to another to obtain prescriptions. They use the drugs to satisfy their dependencies or sell them for profit on the street. Overdose deaths from opiates quadrupled from about 4,000 in 1999 to more than 16,600 in 2010.
