Cab Services May Reduce Drunk Driving

With all of the cab services like Uber popping up across the United States, getting home safe has never been so easy.

In 2012, over 10 million people drove under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but only a small percentage of these drivers were pulled over and arrested. This means there are millions of drivers that may continue to drive drunk because they did not experience the consequences. There are many other safe alternatives to getting home than getting behind the wheel while under the influence.

First, there is always the option of having a designated driver. This is an individual who is in charge of getting their friends home safely. However, this is not always an option for some people who want to celebrate an occasion as a group and not leave one person out. New cab services can solve this problem. Services like Uber are convenient ways to order a cab through your smart phone or via a quick phone call. Within a few minutes, a sober driver can be at any location to pick you up.

These services are a great idea to reduce drunk driving rates, but are they effective in doing so? Uber analyzed data from before and after their services existed in major cities and found that during peak bar closing hours, the rates of people trying to get an Uber car were slightly higher. It may not be much, but it is a start to less driving under the influence.
