Alcohol-Free MLB Clubhouses?

Alcohol-Free MLB Clubhouses?

There was an oddly surprising story that broke in Major League Baseball last year involving alcohol in the player’s clubhouse. After the Boston Red Sox had a miserable last month of the season that led to them missing the playoffs, their coach was fired and a media storm ensued where news broke that a good portion of the Red Sox pitchers would drink beer in the clubhouse on their off days. It came as a surprise to many fans that players would drink during games—even if they weren’t playing, but many teams in baseball this year are banning alcohol in the club house.

It’s no secret that beer is heavily identified in Major League Baseball. Beer sales are a major source of revenue for MLB teams and there are actually three stadiums named after beer companies—(Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals; Coors Field, Colorado Rockies; Miller Park, Milwaukee Brewers). But given the public perception of this story, it’s important for teams and players to disassociate themselves with drinking during games because MLB players are role models to many youths. The message that clubs are sending by banning alcohol in the clubhouse speaks measures for promoting a healthier lifestyle and promoting against drunk driving.

There have been a few tragic stories over the years involving professional sports players getting in drunk driving accidents, and there are a handful of stories each season about players and coaches getting a DUI after a game, so teams banning alcohol in the clubhouse is a strong move. Professional athletes are no exception to the law and they certainly aren’t immune to succumbing to drug and alcohol addictions. Today it can be very common for people to fall into an alcohol addiction to try and cope with their problems, but substance abuse is never the right way to go, and unfortunately sometimes people learn the hard way. But in order to recover, it’s extremely important to first become conscious of your problem, or make your loved one conscious of their problem, and then find that burning motivation to change the addictive ways. It can be very difficult for a drug addict or an alcoholic and their family to accomplish these things on their own, so that’s where Seabrook can help.
