Tennessee Law Targets Pregnant Women Who Abuse Drugs

Tennessee passed a controversial state law, the first of its kind in the United States that targets pregnant women who use illegal drugs while pregnant. Under this new law, a pregnant woman can be prosecuted for assault if she is found guilty of using illegal drugs while pregnant. Recently, the first woman was arrested under this new law and placed behind bars shortly after delivering her child. There is a provision in this law that allows a woman to avoid conviction if she completes and addiction treatment program. The question becomes, will other states begin to pass similar laws.
