Pro Boxer’s Post-Retirement Substance Abuse

Pro Boxer’s Post-Retirement Substance Abuse

It was only a few years ago that professional boxer Ricky Hatton took his (45-1) career record up against Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas, with each of the boxers netting a roughly $12 million dollar purse for the bout. At the time of the fight in 2009, Hatton was the pride of English boxing. He is a former WBA (Super), IBF, The Ring, & British light welterweight champion, and WBA welterweight champion. But after losing his last fight to Manny Pacquiao, Hatton decided to retire from boxing—and he’s had a rough time dealing with it.

Hatton has attributed his struggle to deal with retirement due to his binge drinking and drug use.  In 2010 there was a large media fuss in England when a video surfaced on the web of Hatton binge drinking and snorting cocaine in a hotel room. The day after the video surfaced, Hatton was quick to admit that he was battling a health issues and he needed to attend a rehab clinic in London to begin intensive treatment. Hatton has been rehabbing and getting his life back in order since, but it was definitely encouraging to see him take the first and most important step in recovery—admitting that you have a problem and seeking professional help.

Many people turn to drugs and alcohol when they have trouble dealing with something in life. In Ricky Hatton’s case, it was due to the fact that his boxing career was over and he had trouble dealing with that—but just like any other situation, turning to drugs and alcohol will only make the problem worse.
