Carter Brother Successful in Rehab
A few short weeks ago the tragic story of Leslie Carter, brother of famous Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, dying from a combination of Olanzapine (used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder), Cyclobenzaprine (a muscle relaxant) and Alprazolam (used to treat anxiety or panic disorders) shocked the Carter family. The cause of death won’t be official until the autopsy report in a few weeks, but it’s presumed given the evidence that she died from a dangerous overdose and mix of these drugs. Fortunately for the family, younger brother Aaron Carter landed in a treatment center for his own problems last year but has seemingly overcome them.
The 23-year-old singer went to a private treatment center in Southern California in January 2011, where he is getting help for addiction issues at the urging of his family and friends. Carter had been arrested with marijuana before and given the nature and previous celebrity patients of his treatment center, the Betty Ford Center, it was presumed that he was there for some kind of drug or alcohol addiction. Like Drew Barrymore and Lindsay Lohan, Carter has had the ‘child star gone bad’ label attached to him. Last July Carter even went into detail about his relationship with king of pop Michael Jackson, saying , “Yes, he gave me wine. I mean, I could have refused, but I was 15.’ As for drugs? He gave me cocaine. I felt weird about that and other stuff… We spoke afterwards, hours and hours, on the phone. I admired Michael, but his behavior bothered me a lot.” Carter has obviously been exposed to many bad influences growing up in a party culture industry, but after going through a successful stint in rehab last year, he appears to be on the road to recovery.
The most important lesson that can be taken from this story is Carter’s initiative to admit himself into treatment, meaning that he understood that he had a problem and he needed professional help to treat it.
