Opinion Piece: Stop War on Drugs and Curb Gun Violence

A recent editorial published in the Huffington Post has made the case that America’s “war on drugs” could be responsible for a large proportion of the gun violence in this country. This past summer was known as “the summer of the gun,” and deaths and shootings have skyrocketed in the past few years to reach an epidemic level. The editorial makes the case that the war on drugs is not working, and refers to the ways that America’s enforcement of drug laws has bred more violence among gangs.

“And what’s the business of gangs? Obviously, drugs,” said, Jim Gierach, a former Chicago-area prosecutor. “We can change drug policy… It’s the way to reduce violence that’s easy, the one that’s obvious.” New Jersey governor Chris Christie has made similar remarks about the dangerous nature of the war on drugs, even going so far as to call it a “failure.” He has urged lawmakers to consider treatment programs as the best option in fighting drug addiction.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drug abuse or know someone who does, you should seek help now for yourself or your loved one. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
