Ohio Prisoners Are On Drugs, Study Finds

Ohio public prison officials are getting more and more concerned with the rising numbers of prisoners who are testing positive for drugs. This is obviously a worrying issue for prisons, which are supposed to be places where prisoners are kept away from drugs and alcohol. The relatively high rate of positive drug responses included mostly marijuana, and a few cases of opiates, cocaine, and alcohol. Prison officials found a rate of 3.32% of prisoners who tested positive for some controlled substance that is not allowed in prisons.

“That is too high and absolutely unacceptable as part of security of a prison,” said the director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. People have long known that people who use and abuse drugs are more prone to crime and violence. This rising rate of drug usage in prisons could lead to higher incidences of prison unrest or even overdoses. This could even enable drug addicts who are in prison to keep up their habits, which can lead to further social problems and even more prison time.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drug abuse or know someone who does, you should seek help now for yourself or your loved one. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
