NJ Supreme Court Rules Druggy Pregnancies Aren’t Child Abuse

The New Jersey state Supreme Court has recently ruled that a woman taking illegal drugs while pregnant does not technically constitute “child abuse.” The ruling was decided in a case in which a Cape May child was born with cocaine in his system. This was enough for New Jersey’s Division of Youth and Family Services to put restrictions on the custody of the child and his half-brother. The mother fought it to the state Supreme Court, which ruled that New Jersey child welfare laws only protect babies after they’re born.

If you need a more tragic example of what drugs to can do to a family, you’ll have a hard time finding one. Just know that drugs do ruin lives, including the life of this mother, who has to appear in long drawn-out court battles, and the life of this young boy who was born with cocaine in his bloodstream. If you’re doing drugs, there’s no telling who you’re hurting—including yourself.

If you have a problem with alcohol or drug abuse or know someone who does, you should seek help now for yourself or your loved one. Thankfully, there is good help available. Detoxification and behavioral therapy have proven to be effective in treating drug dependence. Addicts are often unable to complete treatment on their own or with family members, so it’s very important to seek the right treatment center.
