Kennedy Suffered From Mental Disease

Mary Kennedy committed suicide in May 2012, and sadly it appears that Mary ended her own life because of mental issues that she battled for years.  According to friends close to the family Mary, the wife of Robert Kennedy –who is the nephew of John F. Kennedy, suffered from depression and alcoholism. Her illness had apparently gotten worse in recent months, where she missed/cancelled events and appointments—claiming to be sick. Mary and Robert had been battling for custody of their four kids for years and this significantly contributed to her depression.

Many people today deal with depression and substance abuse. These are mental diseases that can lead to an alienated lifestyle and estranged relationships—and it can be difficult for other people to realize the seriousness of the disease. Robert’s sister Kerry exemplified the difficulty of recognizing mental illness by explaining that Mary “had good moments and bad moments… she could be at times absolutely beautiful and outgoing and engaging and professional in one respect, and in other times she just seemed like she was out of it.” Her depression led to alcohol abuse and overall her issues ended up being the driving force behind her death—which is a very gloomy situation because maybe with some help she could have overcame her issues.

It’s unfortunately common for people to fall into an alcohol addiction to try and cope with their problems, but substance abuse is never the right way to go, and unfortunately sometimes people learn the hard way. But in order to recover, it’s extremely important to first become conscious of your problem, or make your loved one conscious of their problem, and then find that burning motivation to change the addictive ways. It can be very difficult for a drug addict or an alcoholic and their family to accomplish these things on their own, so that’s where Seabrook can help.
