Drug Rehab Success Story: Chris Rene

Drug Rehab Success Story: Chris Rene

Sometimes it takes an epiphany or a ‘eureka’ moment for an addict to realize what their life has come to. For X-factor contestant Chris Rene, his moment came when he realized that having a job as a trash collector wouldn’t result in a bright future for him or his son. Chris, like many addicts today, was born into a good family with loving parents and siblings. But regardless of his family life at the age of 12 he started smoking marijuana, at the age of 15 he started drinking alcohol, and soon after he got into cocaine and methamphetamines. Unfortunately this path is a common one to take for many addicts, but the difference in the story of Chris Rene is that he overcame his addictive behaviors and made something of himself. In December 2011 Chris made it to the final round of the singing competition the X-Factor USA 2011. Though Chris didn’t win the competition, it’s almost a sure thing that he will continue his musical career in some capacity given the excellent exposure and popularity that he has built up through his performances on the show.

Chris’ performances and the behind the scenes look at his life serve as great inspiration for those struggling with addiction. During one of the X-Factor shows, Chris admits that “I have this disease called addiction. The shame and the guilt just got to me, it just totally broke me. There is always a chance and there is always a choice. Instead of doing nothing, I want my son to see me singing on stages, because life is too precious to waste.” Chris is 28 years old and at the start of the show he had just been release from rehab 70 days prior. He claims that once he was free from drinking and using drugs, his mind became clear and the musical talent and lyrics simply flowed through him. Chris is a great example of how an addict can break free from their unhealthy behaviors and unleash their true potential and talent.
