Caldwell, NJ Council Candidate Faces Drug Charges

A write-in candidate for a council seat in Caldwell, NJ dropped out of the race recently right before being indicted for drug possession charges. Stephen Modica received more than 60 write-in votes in the recent race, before dropping out of the race. Two days later, police responded to a burglar alarm at Modica’s house and found a bong and several grams of marijuana inside the residence. Modica was charged with having less than 50 grams of marijuana, and for possession within 1000 feet of a school. In total, he has been charged with two misdemeanors.

Interestingly enough, criminal background checks are not performed on candidates for council elections, including Modica. Though he received some votes in the election, and might have gone on to a promising political career, Modica’s career is most likely over after this scandal.
