Some Drug and Alcohol Users Underestimate Consumption Levels
According to research from the Global Drug Survey (GDS), published in the journal of Social Science and Medicine, 68 percent of study participants reported to drinking at high and harmful levels. However, most of them claimed that their level of drinking was average, or even low.
This assumption matched their drug use as well. Those who used drugs heavily tried to downplay how often they actually used. The heaviest users of ecstasy and cocaine and daily marijuana users all reported they were using at a low level. The reason for the downplay in drug use was fear of a bad reputation.
The heavy drug and alcohol users who recognized their levels of use were most likely to want to reduce their use. The heavy users who did not recognize their levels also wanted to cut back, but at a much lower rate.
