TV Producer Dies from Cocaine Overdose

Cocaine has been prominent in America since the l970’s—especially in Hollywood, and that trend has continued today. American TV producer Jeff Rice died earlier this month after a cocaine overdose in South Africa. Rice ran his own South Africa-based production company and occasionally did work for TV’s “The Amazing Race.” Rice was found dead and his assistant Kathryn Fuller was found unconscious in a Kampala hotel last week. Rice’s wife initially thought that the two might have been poisoned, but the Uganda Police Force performed an autopsy on Rice that showed major metabolites of cocaine in his system, Fuller tested positive for cocaine, and investigators found a white bag in the hotel room.

It’s unfortunate that people not only use cocaine, but abuse it to the point that there’s deaths from overdoses. Regardless of how or how frequently cocaine is used, a user can experience acute cardiovascular or cerebrovascular emergencies, such as a heart attack or stroke, which may cause sudden death. Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizure followed by respiratory arrest.

People who use cocaine should take this story as a lesson about the possible dangers of the drug. Overdose and death are the harsh realities of cocaine. Because cocaine is highly addictive, regular cocaine users who need to use more in order to get high are at an even greater risk for overdose.
