The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) wants to lower the legal blood alcohol limit in 2016. They propose that the current 0.08 legal limit be lowered to 0.05. They hope that by lowering the legal limit, the number of fatal car accidents due to drunk driving will decrease.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash every two minutes. Additionally, 4,000 people are arrested daily for driving under the influence, just a small portion of the 300,000 who commit this offense daily.

The NTSB believes that lowering the legal limit will discourage people from drinking too much, or driving after drinking at all. Many organizations, like AAA Northeast Club, support this proposal. Other groups believe ignition locks or more sobriety check points are the way to approach this problem.

The NTSB attempted to lower the legal limit last year as well. Currently, there is no action to change the legal limit in New Jersey.
