Overcoming Bath Salt Addiction

The bath salt epidemic has gotten scary and people that are addicted to this new drug have displayed some shocking side effects. Some people have admitted to an addiction after just one use of the substance known as bath salts. They’re a synthetic designer drug made by illegal street chemists and the drug was formerly sold legally in local head shops in packets labeled as bath salts. They were labeled not for human consumption, but for a while the drugs were bought and abused under the radar of the DEA. In September 2011 the DEA placed an emergency ban on bath salts due to the extremely dangerous and strange effects that people were showing up at hospitals with. One extreme case that got a lot of public attention is a woman a few weeks ago appeared at a hospital while under the influence of bath salts and doctors had to amputate her arm because they found flesh eating bacteria from injecting bath salts.

It’s a dangerous drug to get involved with and a local news station in Michigan interviewed a woman about her experiences. She explained her struggle with bath salts:  “I lost the main reason to me being alive. Somebody came over, I watched them inject it, and they got extremely high,” she said. “I wanted to try it, then I began doing it every single day for weeks upon weeks.” Describing her addiction as “disgusting,” she said she was simply living to chase a high that she only enjoyed for a few moments, merely tolerating the side effects. “I was hallucinating–I thought my dog was talking to me, I thought people were peeking in my windows,” she said.

Users have described bath salts as more addictive than crystal meth and cocaine, so abuse shouldn’t be taken lightly. Bath salts have been known to cause sudden deaths, but users still have hope to recover.
