Alcoholic Soda Trend

Sales of alcoholic sodas totaled $116 million in 2015, making it one of the top alcoholic trends of the year. Beginning with alcoholic root beer, this trend snow balled into all different flavors of hard sodas including orange, ginger ale, cream, etc. These new drinks were welcomed by the industry and consumers.

However, there is a major problem with this new trend, which is the fact that these alcoholic sodas attract children and young adults. The campaigns done for these products show the alcoholic beverages looking just like regular sodas, making it enticing for those underage. They then want to try the product, which increases the likelihood of underage consumption. And because reports state that the products do not taste like alcohol, it could lead to binge drinking.

Many people are calling for laws on advertising of these products. Similar to laws against advertising cigarettes and regular alcohol to children, this should be covered as well.
