Secondhand Drinking

It is a common fact that secondhand smoking causes health problems for thousands of people. A person’s use of cigarettes around their family member or friends causes problems for those people due to the inhalation of smoke. Secondhand drinking, on the other hand, does not cause any physical health problems, but it does cause emotional issues for over 90 million Americans.

Spending a lot of time with an alcoholic can cause a myriad of problems. The alcoholic could be physically, verbally or mentally abusive towards others. They can also put others in danger while doing things like driving under the influence or committing a crime. Being a victim of abuse or witnessing upsetting things can cause emotional issues for people, which could lead to anxiety or depression. Being in close quarters with an alcoholic can also cause a lot of tension because the alcoholic’s loved one is constantly worried about the addiction.

There are a few things you can do to prevent the side effects of secondhand drinking. First you have to realize that their addiction is not your fault. You cannot control the addiction or the addict. You also have to let go of control of the situation and in some cases distance yourself from the alcoholic until they get the help they need. It may be beneficial to attend self-help meetings or other family programs. These programs will not only teach you about the disease of addiction but will also teach you coping skills.
