What to Expect in Outpatient Addiction Treatment

When you feel it’s time to get professional care for substance use disorder (SUD) or alcohol use disorder (AUD), there’s no need to wait. Outpatient treatment offers many advantages for starting a program while still maintaining a semblance of your daily life. As one of Newsweek’s Best Addiction Centers, Seabrook is proud to offer you a comprehensive outpatient program with evidence-based practices and holistic wellness options.

Benefits of an Outpatient Addiction Program

Studies show that intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are quite effective for many people needing treatment for AUD and SUD. A key reason is that they’re usually structured in the same way as residential, or inpatient, rehabilitation programs with similar components, such as:

  • In-depth assessments
  • Partial care/partial hospitalization
  • Distinct IOP services for clients enrolled in medication-assisted treatment, if necessary
  • Individual counseling for co-occurring mental health, SUD, and AUD issues
  • Access to group and individual therapies, peer support programs, and other mutual aid communities
  • Traditional aftercare and relapse prevention initiatives

Here are some advantages of outpatient treatment:

  • Depending on your needs, you’ll develop consistency of care over 2–6 months.
  • An IOP can be scheduled around work, child care, and other daily responsibilities.
  • You’re involved for a few hours each program day, multiple times per week.
  • Groups are small, usually not exceeding more than 10 people.
  • There’s not a transition from a long-term residential stay to back home.
  • It’s frequently less expensive than inpatient care.

Disadvantages of Outpatient Treatment

It’s important to remember that the suitability of IOP varies from person to person.

Make sure to evaluate the following factors carefully before deciding between a residential or outpatient treatment program

  • Depending on the IOP, there might be less support for medically supervised detoxification.
  • A good home support system is critical to help manage withdrawal and other emotional ups and downs. Some people don’t have access to this essential structure.
  • Since outpatient treatment allows you to be involved with other aspects of daily life, you’ll need to commit to attending sessions regularly and actively participate in treatment. Without a strong dedication to health, some people don’t fare as well in outpatient care.
  • If you suspect or are certain that you have a co-occurring mental or emotional health disorder along with an AUD or SUD, it’s important to choose a program that can address both conditions. Some IOPs offer dual diagnosis treatment, while others may not.
  • Individuals in an outpatient program still have to face triggers common in early recovery.
