Narcotic Pain Killers are a Leeading Cause Of Death

New Hampshire residents, along with residents from states across the nation, have learned that prescription drug abuse is an epidemic.  Prescription drugs are now the leading addiction and cause of overdose deaths.  They have surpassed other street drugs like cocaine and heroin.  In fact, Oxycodone the second most prevalent drug of choice behind alcohol.  The New Hampshire medical examiner’s office reported that drug overdose deaths have tripled since 2000 and almost half that overdosed and died had methadone or Oxycodone, or both, in their systems.

Addicts are racing to hospitals and doctor’s offices looking for prescriptions for Oxycodone and Percocet.  These same drugs are killing more people, and keeping treatment facilities packed every year.

New Hampshire has been taking steps to fight this epidemic.  They are the 49th state to pass legislation to create a prescription monitoring program.  This monitoring system forced doctors and pharmacists to keep better track of what prescriptions patients currently use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that one in five high school students have taken Oxycodone, Xanax or Adderall without a prescription.   The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy found that dosage of prescription drugs like Oxycodone, increased from 74 milligrams to 369 milligrams.

It is no surprise that the number of people who entered drug and alcohol rehab facilities has also more than doubled in recent years.

In an effort to continue to fight the war on drugs and drug abuse, New Hampshire continues to hold Prescription Drug Take Back Days twice a year.  They have collected tens of thousands of tons of expired, unused and otherwise unwanted prescription drugs.  The more drugs taken off the street the less likely they will get into the wrong hands.
