Medical Marijuana and Drug-Free Schools
Medical Marijuana and Drug-Free Schools
Montclair, New Jersey, is set to become the location of the state’s first legal medial marijuana dispensary, but local school officials want to make it clear that drugs are not welcome on campus. Montclair School Superintendent Penny MacCormack reiterated that the school has a zero-tolerance policy for drug possession, including for marijuana. She also mentioned that Montclair’s problems with drugs are not as bad as they could be: “We’ve had a mild number of infractions, but we don’t want any. We want to be at zero,” she said.
Though it has become increasingly clear that their are legitimate medical uses for marijuana, the danger posed by having drugs on school property is very serious. Some young people might think marijuana is less dangerous than other, “harder” drugs like heroin, cocaine, crack, PCP, prescription painkillers, or meth, but even pot should not be messed around with. It’s still possible to develop a psychological addiction to marijuana, which puts young people at risk. Though medical marijuana dispensaries might help alleviate the problem of rampant drug-dealing, the drugs belong away from the schools.
If you have a problem with drug addiction or dependence, you should seek help now. Thankfully, there is good help available.
