Drug Overdoses Up in New Jersey and Rising Fast in Ocean County

Ocean County NJ lost 10 lives in April and another six lives in May to overdoses from heroin, prescription pills or a combination of both. There have already been five deaths in June. Not even halfway through the year and this county has had 52 fatal overdoses. This is one less than the entire year before. If you think heroin is not a problem in your area, you are sadly mistaken. Heroin is easier to get than alcohol and marijuana.

New Jersey officials report that heroin use is increasing across the entire state. Cape May County’s 2013 fatal overdose total is about to surpass 2012’s, and Hunterdon County had two overdose deaths in 2012, and has already had two in 2013. Records also show the number of people between the ages of 18 and 25 seeking treatment for opiate addiction jumped by 12 percent between 2010 and 2011. There were 368 deaths related to heroin in the state’s 21 counties in 2011, up from 287 in 2010.Police also state that the number of close calls young adults brought back to life after slipping into unconsciousness is extremely high.

Parents are encouraged to throw away unused medicines and doctors warned against overprescribing, but that has made it much harder to find pills. As the pill supply was cut, the demand for heroin, a cheaper alternative, have grown.
