E-Cigarette Sales on the Rise
According to a new study conducted by Euromonitor International, the sales of e-cigarettes globally has doubled to 6 billion from 2013 to 2014. The United States alone accounts for almost half of global sales at 2.8 billion. A large portion of the other half comes from the United Kingdom.
Researchers say there was such a high increase because e-cigarettes are being marketed as the perfect item to help quit smoking. They are also being advertised as healthy. However, the United States government has stated numerous times that there is not enough evidence to suggest that the e-cigarettes actually do help people quit. Other studies have shown that they are also not much healthier than regular cigarettes because they still contain nicotine.
During the time of the rapid increase, the sales of regular cigarettes decreased by .4 percent. Researchers are not sure if the major increase of e-cigarette sales is related to the small decrease of cigarette sales.
