Study Shows Number of Positive Pre-Employment Drug Tests Increasing

Results from a recent study done by Quest Diagnostics reveal that the amount of employees testing positive for drugs has increased for the first time in a decade. The rate is now at 3.7 percent positive results compared to 3.5  percent in 2013. This is mainly due to legalization of marijuana in many states, specifically Colorado and Washington where there was a 20 percent increase in marijuana users when the drug became legalized

So does this mean the rates of positive drug tests will continue to increase as more states adopt legal  marijuana? Director of Science and Technology at Quest Diagnostics Employer Solutions said that this could be a sign of things to come but it is too early to draw conclusions about the future at this point in time.

Legalization of marijuana and positive drugs tests from it put employers in a sticky situation. Although it is legal in certain states, it is still illegal under Federal Law. Therefore, if employers choose, they can still ban the use of marijuana for their employees, whether it is bought and used legally or not.
