Senior Substance Abuse

Most of us know that substance abuse knows no boundaries, and it is a growing concern among the senior population. In recent studies conducted by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, it is found that up to 30% of people aged between 75-85 have experienced drinking problems. Additionally, in a 2008 study conducted by Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration, it was discovered that 2% of older adults in retirement communities reported using an illicit drug. It’s not just the drinking that is giving people concerns but it’s the amount of prescribed medications along with illicit drugs that are being taken in addition to the alcohol consumption.

For many this study could not have come at a better time because many are aware of the substance abuse battle that the younger generations face but so little are talking about how it’s affecting our seniors. Seabrook recognizes the effectiveness of drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs and we stand firm on the belief that recovery is possible!
