Having Fun In Recovery

Blog post by: Alumni Relations Specialist

One of the top things I hear people talk about when trying to get clean and sober is “How am I going to have any fun now?”  My response to them is, “you were having fun before you got here?”  Lying, stealing, cheating, getting sick, passing out, embarrassing yourself, not remembering anything you did, that was fun for you?  Now that the drinking and drugging is done, you can start having real fun.  For me, just sitting down and watching a movie with my kids and being able to stay awake for the entire thing is fun for me!  Having the energy and the willingness to take my dog for a walk is fun for me.  Going out to eat with a group of friends, laughing so hard that my stomach hurts and I have tears rolling down my cheeks is fun for me.  It is the small things that you learn to appreciate.  Waking up without an urge, quality family time, long road trips, meeting new and interesting people in the rooms, some small examples of what enjoying and having fun in recovery is all about.
