Brutally Honest

Blog post by: Alumni Relations Specialist

Have you ever had anyone come up to you and say “can I be honest with you” and then proceed to be a complete jerk, then applaud themselves for being so “brutally” honest? That’s like having a fly on the wall and using a bazooka to kill it. This is a spiritual program, I’m not sure how well “brutality” fits.  When we first get clean and sober, we might have a tough time practicing spiritual principles, for me it just went against my nature. But that’s why the book says “practice.” Everyone comes up short, not one of us is perfect. If we were perfect we would not be human.  For me, it came slowly over a period of time and with the help of other recovering addicts, I’ve learned how to apply them in my life with a little more ease. I’m no longer killing flies with bazookas, thank God.

Honesty without compassion is brutality.” – Anonymous
