Baltimore Native Starts Alcohol Abuse Program

American R&B singer-songwriter, actor, dancer, model, and Baltimore, Maryland Native Mario (best known for his hit singles “Just a Friend 2002” and “Let Me Love You” (2004), which won him two Billboard awards, as well as for appearing in the films Step Up and Freedom Writers) is no stranger to substance abuse. His mother is addicted to heroin and it has taken a personal toll in his life today and in his family life growing up as a kid in Baltimore. This is why Mario has decided to start a substance abuse program in a Baltimore area school, so he can help kids that were in his situation live up to their full potential.

Mario will be starting ‘The Mario Do Right Foundation’ at the REACH! School in Baltimore, whose primary focus is getting their students into college. Mario’s program will teach kids healthy alternative to smoking, drinking, and using drugs through peer pressure resistance methods and alternative healthy activities. Also as a part of this program there will be referrals to the University of Maryland Medical Center for substance abuse treatment for parents of students in the REACH! School who struggle with any addiction. Mario will interact will the kids in the Do Right Foundation through SKYPE, and it is a great real world example of the powers of addiction treatment and substance abuse prevention.

It’s truly inspirational that some celebrities can become so involved in their communities, and it’s even more impressive that Mario is attacking a huge problem in our society today—substance abuse and its effect on youths. Many parents today often struggle with substance abuse, like Mario’s mom does with heroin, and getting treatment for their problem just isn’t a priority for them. It’s a troubling situation, but some people just need the motivation and push to get them into a treatment center.
